Kill La Kill Mako Progress by magion02 Kill La Kill Mako Progress by magion02
Hi! I know you guys want more , so here's another one to enjoy!

This time is my Mako's illustration progress , a lil different from my other works because I started in grey scale .

"Why greyscale?"
-I usually start in grey scale because it is easier for me to render the lighting and shadows especially for an illustration that has lots of details to cover. Define the details first in grey scale , color comes in later.

So I hope it will be helpful for you guys to understand how it is made :)

How long does it take you to do a painting like this? Hours or days?

Any chance you could make step-by-step video guide from this? I would like to learn to make sketches/lineart and colour as fabulously as you do (drawing paper+scan+colouring via mouse atm). What program + tablet you use?

At first could not recognize the character, even though watched (and loved!) the show. She looks almost too serious and determined :D! Beautiful work.

I'd like to ask few questions,
- in panel 5 (bottom left), what type of layer did you use for coloring? Is it multiply?
- After the base color (panel 5), what type of layer did use for further coloring detail? Is it overlay or ...?
- For the lineart, in coloring panel (bottom), did you delete the lineart or over paint it.

Thank you for sharing this nice step to step image.

Hello! i had the same questions as the person above but i have still one doubt, do you merge the layers at one point when you are adding the colors?

Yes :) the lesser the layer the easier for me to paint. It's okay to have more layers though , nothing wrong with that. Just that I feel more comfortable with less layer.

How do you apply the colour to the black and white? I try to do it in both photoshop and sai and it never seems to go right for me :( Amazing progress though!

Create another colored layer under "color" or "overlay" mode :) then adjust the color til it looks right for you

oh gosh I just realized that it is MAKO-chan. because she doesn't look as naive and stupid-cute-bubbly character she made me feel she is. No offense, really, it's one of coolest characters in her "type", haha. And I adore her windy clothing... yet she does look deadly serious as usual.

good work, wouild be interesting to see recorded video process.
Question, when you work on coloring, do you only work on "color" mode layer?

your improvement over years is inspiring, good luck with the growth of it even further :)

so after looking at a few of your progress shots, half start with greyscale and half start with flat colours. what is easier for you and why you use both instead of just one? what's the comparison?

Please answer this question as I am very desperate in improving my digital painting!

So what i've noticed in your greyscaling is that you slowly merge and blend out your lineart. How exactly do you bring out the details like that? Whenever I try and blend away my lineart it just looks all smeared and messy and I can't exactly make out the details from object to another. I hope you get what I mean by that. ANY advice will be appreciated!

PS: Your artwork is awesome :D

In this case , TIME is the key. Just take as much time as you can to slowly paint over the outline and make sure to have a nice clean crisp edge. Mine too looked messy at first but I took my time and clean it up :) or you can try use clipping mask . Like everyone else said , practice makes perfect.

If you can please answer this question.

I want to know when you add the color layer is it above the grayscale or in the bottom . And also what type of mode is it, (overplayed, multiply, darken etc.)

What's your process when painting in gray scale? Do you change the canvas to gray scale? Or do you keep it in normal color mode and just use black and white colors? I've seen people do it both ways, so I don't know.
